An Oval In My Backyard

January 31st, 2011

When I am out and about I tend to get asked a very similar series of questions with respect to my new "career". Generally ranging from how training is going, what my new diet is like, what its like in Calgary, etc. One question that often comes up is where I live in Calgary.

I live in University of Calgary housing as a part of their "Conference Services" housing. Basically I live where vis ...

Cindy Klassen 1, Kevin Jagger 0

January 29th, 2011
As I skated to the line today I could not help but think back to this year's Golden Globes when host Ricky Gervais introduced Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. For those who missed it here is the clip.

I played Tim Allen to Cindy's Tom Hanks.

In the outer lane, the most decorated Winter Olympian in Canadian history, current world record holder in 3 distances, former Overall World Champion, recip ...

Huge congratulations go out to Long Track Long Shot sponsor

Yesterday Ubertor announced a partnership with the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB) to be the official provider of websites to Calgary real estate professionals. I have lauded the merits of the Ubertor platform here before as LongTrackLongShot.com is powered by Ubertor and will continue to do so.

Ubertor is not just for ...

Epic Ride for an Epic Cause: 2011 Ride to Conquer Cancer - 300 Spots Left!

January 27th, 2011

Epic is an oft overused term. Not in this case.

I just got an email from the 2011 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting BC Cancer Foundation. It said there was only 300 spots left for this year's ride!

Unfortunately this year I am not in a financial position to partake in the ride. Each rider is required to raise a minimum of $2,500 - it is NOT as hard as it sounds. Just sign up, th ...

Team Canada Q&A: Gil Junio

January 25th, 2011
Gil Junio Team Canada Kevin Jagger Long Track Long Shot Speed Skating.jpg

At 5'8 148 lbs, Canadian Gil Junio looks more like a short track speed skater than a long track one. In fact, he used to be. Prior to a 2009 accident in which he broke his back, Gil was an up and coming Canadian short tracker. Last year he decided to set aside the fixed heels and give the klap skates a go as a safer way to train and continue on his journey of representing Canada.

Controversy Over New ISU Line Rule Continues

January 23rd, 2011

I mentioned in a post at the beginning of the year of new rulings that were instituted by the International Skating Union (ISU) at the start of the 2010-2011 long track speed skating season.

Stefan Groothuis ISU Line Rule 2011 World Sprint Championships Long Track Speed SkatingThe new "line rule" prohibits a skater from crossing the centre line on the final straightaway; however, the ruling language includes a caveat if the line infraction occurs on the 2nd corner of a 500m ...

How to Set Up a Custom URL Shortener with Bit.ly Pro

Custom URL Shortener Screen Shot.png

For those of you with a blog and on Twitter (follow me here) you may have come in contact with a service called Bit.ly. Bit.ly is a URL shortener that allows you to...shorten URLs.

Twitter is the world of 140 characters so every character is "crucial". Instead of:

I can go to bit.ly and get the URL shortened to:

Race Day: 500m & 1000m

January 22nd, 2011

Back into the groove of things after the holidays, we have had a solid couple weeks of practice and training. This week in particular was a heavy volume week. Usually we have one tempo (400m top speed) on Fridays. This week I had 5 tempos (2 400ms on Tuesday, 2 500ms on Wednesday and our Friday tradition). Not to mention last night I hit my personal best 3 rep hang clean.

On an awesome not ...

Updated Training Video

January 10th, 2011

Here is the most recent training video. Shows some "longer" laps as opposed to just accels. The key things to watch for are my shoulders staying relaxed but not dipping with the stride, also my recovery leg needs to swing behind me closer to the ice, you'll see that it kind of kicks up a bit. That is a result of carrying the stride back and not to the side - needs to go out to the side to c ...
