Had a trail run through Pacific Spirit Regional Park this morning. With some heavy rain earlier in the week I was not too sure how the trail was going to hold up but was pleasantly surprised to see the paths in such great condition after a recent trail work initiative by Metro Vancouver Regional Parks.

Crews were all over the paths laying down and levelling rocks that offered quite a bit o ...

Speed Skating Dryland Training: Low Walks Explained

September 26th, 2011
7 Low Walks Speed Skating Dryland Kevin Jagger Long Track Long Shot Amateur Athlete Canada Blog

Last week I published a post on our low walks practice, a staple of many speed skater's dryland training regimen. The post received some follow up comments and questions asking about low walks and how the program was done. I need to remember that a lot of the terms I use are 'speed skating' terms and sometimes require further explanation. In this case, even a follow up tweet would not expla ...

Here are two recent video updates (if you are YouTube, you can subscribe to my channel here). The first shows the various training programs we do throughout the week. The second video shows a comparison of a little skating from last week to the same time last. Starting to show a little improvement, long way to go!

Speed Skating Dryland Training: Low Walks

With Jass Low Walks Speed Skating Dryland Kevin Jagger Long Track Long Shot Amateur Athlete Canada Blog

One of the hardest training programs of the week has got to be low walks. Its painful no matter how the program is laid out and too be honest simply is not much fun. With Jacynthe in town I asked her if she wanted to take part in our training program today. Being the great sport that she is, she said yes!

Jacynthe completed the program: 3 x 3 mins of low walks...twice.

The three minutes ...

Wingate Test Results November 2011

September 6th, 2011

Today was the first of two testing days. The Wingate Test was up today and the MAP test is tomorrow. The Wingate is pretty brutal - 30 seconds of all out sprint on the bike. Sounds easy...but then again so do hill sprints

The Wingate test is an anaerobic test that is used to measure peak anaerobic power, as well as anaerobic capacity.

Here are my results from today compared to the other ...

My Speed Skating Dryland Training: Typical Week In Review

July 2nd, 2011
I am often asked what my typical week of training is like over the summer so I thought I would walk through this past week.

Sunday (180min Bike Ride)

Went for a 180 minute sub-aerobic ride (64km) around Richmond with my brother David and John Scott.

Here is a map of the ride route:

Wreck Beach Stairs Sprints - Tempo Simulation

Wreck Beach 2 Kevin Jagger Long Track Long Shot Speed Sakting Blog Amateur Athlete Canada .jpg

Today's program jumped off the page when I first saw it last week: stair climb sprint intervals, tempo simulation.

Typically, on ice, the third week of a heavy volume long track speed skating program would have a pair of tempos at the end of it (for sprinters that means a 400m tempo and an 800m tempo). So it the offseason we prepare for it with a solid lactic capacity workout to cap off a ...

Speed Skating Warmup Jumps

April 29th, 2011

Before each training session we go through a series of warmups. Here are a couple clips from some of the jumps that are both meant to get the muscles warmed up and continued to build strength while in the "low position".

Technique has improved from last summer but need to continue to work at being stable - especially with the side to side single leg hops.

I am officially through my first week of dryland training for the 2011-2012 season. It was a great week and was nice to get back into the swing of things and work with Brock again. Both Brock and I are happy with how the first season went and we are hungry to make even bigger gains this year.

Here is a quick recap of the week:
