Long Track Long Shot 2012 Year In Review Kevin Jagger Speed Skating.png

2012 has come and gone and it has by far been the best year of my life. On a personal note I married the girl of my dreams in July in a very memorable ceremony with family and close friends present. On the Oval ice it was also a big year. From taking in my first ISU World Championship event to setting new personal bests at Oval Finale to being officially ranked in the Top 50 for the 500m - ...

On Risk | Listening to Matt Damon, Blocking Out Abe Lincoln

“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” - Abraham Lincoln

While I laud Honest Abe’s views on many things, one of his more famous quotes I take issue with (while there is evidence of Lincoln saying this quote, it is originally a biblical passage, namely Proverbs 17:28).

Adhering to this mantra may help save some face at a co ...

With 2011 nearing a close, I took a look back to see which 5 posts generated the most views on Long Track Long Shot. It is always interesting to see which posts generate traction and which ones flop (there are lots more of the latter!). The results drive home the importance of story telling.

The top post has nothing to do with race results but rather the story behind this journey.

VH Speed Skating Introduces 3D Foot Scanning System

November 17th, 2011
VH Custom 3D Scanning Technology

Last year I had my foot molded by Tyler Derraugh for my custom VH speed skates. While the molding process at the time was part art, part science the end result was a great fit in my VH custom speed skates.

This was how my skates were molded:

Now, VH Footwear uses a 3D foot scanning system that records your foot dimensions and saves an electronic copy. The process is much quicker that b ...

Reality Check: Investment Banking From The Outside Looking In

October 17th, 2011
I hear it time and time again with respect to this journey I'm currently on: How can you put your life on hold?

To me it invokes an interesting thought process.

I am learning to do things I have never done before, realizing I don't have all the answers and must welcome help when it is offered, meeting incredible people from all walks of life, and challenging myself each day.

Isn't that was ...

For the 2nd weekend in a row we headed out to Kannanaskis Country to hike up Pocaterra Ridge.

Below is the elevation graph, the first 30 minutes represents our hike back along the highway as we have to drop the car off at the end of the hike and the hike ...

The Good - 500m Opener

I have been working on my starts and openers a lot over the past 3 weeks and was looking to nail a solid start. Got a great first step and opened in 10.7, a new personal best!

After 40 metres I settled in nicely into my outside corner and feeling very comfortable heading into the backstretch.

Out of the 59 skaters that race today my 10.7 opener ranked 17th.

You Can Get Anywhere From Here

Kevin & Jimmy Article Universities.jpg

A lot of times on the Oval I feel like Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore when he enters his first golf tournament and says "Hi, I'm a hockey player but I am playing golf today."

Even my own coach, after a fall the other day said "You'll be fine, you're a football player."

It has been almost seven years since I played competitive football and yet I am still seen as a football player.

Perhap ...
