Very exciting news to announce: my dryland coach, Brock Miron, has accepted a position with Speed Skating Canada to join their coaching staff. Brock will be moving to Calgary in three weeks time and will be taking up a role he has a little familiarity with.

This year the International Skate Union (ISU) has introduced a new demonstration event to the Essent ISU World Cup circuit, the Team Sprint.

This weekend is Fall World Cup Trials at the Calgary Olympic Oval. If you are in Calgary come on out! Best skaters in the country are here and will be battling it out to represent Canada on the Fall World Cup circuit!

Huge congratulations go out to Gil Junio, who was named Alberta's Junior Athlete of the Year! Gil had a phenomenal first season on long track as he qualified for, and then medalled on, the Essent ISU World Cup Circuit.

A back injury forced Gil, a former standout short track skater, to put on the clap skates and try out the long track. He has not looked back since.

Makowsky Takes Bronze in Men's 1500m at World Single Distance Championships

Congratulations to Olympic gold medallist Lucas Makowsky who captured a bronze medal today at the 2011 Essent ISU World Single Distance Championships. 

Lucas had the fastest time of the day with a time of 1:45.22 with just one pair left to race. However, Havard Booko of Norway and American Shani Davis skated 1 - 2 in the final pair.
